Hallotober Tag 2020

I was very excited to be nominated by Emily of That Weird Girl Life for the Hallotober Tag! Halloween is a holiday that my family looks forward to every year (you’ll read why below!), so I’m always excited to share my Halloween excitement!

I wanted to post this article the week before Halloween so that the awesome bloggers tagged at the end can still get their posts out in October. I know, I’m a giver.

I usually struggle to do these types of posts, but since participants only have to come up with one question (that’s right, all of the other questions are provided for you and are specifically about Halloween), I thought I would give it a go!

So a huge thank you to Emily (please also pop over to her blog and read her Hallotober article here) for nominating me! Now, put on your costume, press play on Hocus Pocus, throw your candy corn out, and let’s get this show on the road!

The Rules:

  • Thank the person who tagged you and link to their post
  • Put the rules at the beginning or after introduction
  • Answer the 13 questions
  • Tag 13 people to do the tag
  • Delete Question 13, add a new number one question of your own
  • You are free to use the tag image somewhere in the post

The Questions:

1. What’s your favourite thing about October?

October is when fall is finally in full swing. The air gets colder and sweater weather starts (but it’s not so cold that you don’t want to leave the house at all), all of the pumpkin and apple cider treats are out, there are awesome fall activities like apple picking and corn mazes, and finally, HALLOWEEN!!!! Fall is my favorite season, and October is when fall fully begins. For me, this October has featured outdoor yoga, some new cardigans, apple picking, many, many pumpkin and apple cider donuts, iced lattes with pumpkin cold foam, and some DELICIOUS ramen. It doesn’t get better than that.

2. Are you a big celebrator of Halloween?

Halloween has actually always been one of the biggest holidays in my house because my dad was born on Halloween! Every year, we get together with all of our friends and family at our house to celebrate. Some people come in costume, some don’t, but we all just hang out and enjoy each other’s company. When I was younger, my cousins and I would go out trick-or-treating with our parents around the development. For my family, Halloween has always been a holiday that involved great company and great memories.

3. What’s your favourite horror movie?

I actually don’t like scary movies! I don’t like being scared at all, in fact. Even as an escape room connoisseur who loves to try all the escape rooms she can, I refuse to do scary rooms where you were captured by a murderer or things jump out and scare you. Haunted Houses and those attractions where people chase you around with chainsaws also baffle me. I can’t comprehend why anyone would want to live out a horror fantasy? No thank you, real life is scary enough.

4. Would you rather a cosy night in watching horrors or a big night out in a costume?

Cosy night in (minus the horror movies) always, always, always. I would almost always prefer staying in to leaving my house. I find leaving the house to be a wholly unnecessary activity that should be avoided at all costs. I do love to see my friends and like to go to any parties they throw, but now that we’ve been homebound for a while now and I’m struggling with extended social interaction (not to mention that most costumes are insanely uncomfortable), staying home is definitely preferable.

5. Which has been your most favourite costume to date?

When I was a child, I was a princess for several Halloweens in a row. I absolutely loved all Disney princess movies, Sleeping Beauty in particular. There was one Halloween where I had a pink princess dress that I loved so much, I changed into it when I came home from school everyday. I actually have a small picture of myself in that costume because I love how bold I was. I just loved my damn princess costume, and I’ll be darned if I wasn’t a princess when I wore it.

6. Bobbing for apples or pin the hat on the witch?

Hmmm…I’m not sure if I’ve ever done either of these activities. Honestly, I’d rather play a board game or video game where we can be creative, joke around, and get nasty and competitive. Late nights playing board games are the best.

7. How do you celebrate Halloween?

Normally, we celebrate Halloween with a party for my dad, but there are some years where we have our party on the closest weekend to Halloween, not on the holiday itself. When this happens, my parents, my fiancé, and I hang out on the porch, bundled up in blankets, handing out candy to the children and beer to the adults. I always cherish those memories as much as the party memories because it’s really nice to just have the four of us bonding, too.

8. What’s your least favourite horror?

All of them. Ever since I watched Frequency with my parents as a child, I’ve been terrified of scary movies. Yes, the same Frequency you’re thinking of…the one that’s a not-really-scary thriller. I have no interest in being scared by my entertainment. I do like Disney movies, though. If you want to talk about those, I am there.

9. Do you have a favourite trick or treating memory?

When I was younger, my cousins, friends, and I used to trick-or-treat around my development together, which was always fun. One year, I was the Cat in the Hat, and I created a fun rap for all of us to do instead of saying “trick-or-treat.” Shouldn’t be too surprising from someone who literally wrote one of her school plays in middle school. My cousin, who was dressed like a pirate, would stand in front of us with his arms crossed looking bad-ass as we spit rhymes and cleaned up. We charmed a lot of people out of extra candy that year.

10. What’s your favourite thing about Halloween?

I don’t know that I have a favorite thing in particular. People dressing up in costumes, hanging out with friends and family, and eating a buttload of candy…what could be better than that?

11. Scary costume or Silly costume?

Comfy costume! Is that an answer? I really hate how uncomfortable Halloween costumes tend to be (if you couldn’t tell), so any time I can find a comfortable costume, I’m happy. If it makes people giggle, that’s great! If it scares children into having nightmares, that’s fine too! All I want is to be comfortable in my costume while I’m being uncomfortable interacting with others!

12. What’s your favourite Halloween candy?

Anything with dark chocolate, really. I love dark chocolate Reese’s cups and anything with caramel or marshmallow! Lollipops are good, too. For me, it really depends on what mood I’m in. It’s a shame, Halloween candy just isn’t as special when you can buy it for yourself year-round.

13. Candy corn: Do you love it or hate it?

How to Eat Candy Corn: A Thorough Guide By Renata Leo

Step 1: Buy Candy Corn

Step 2: Open Bag

Step 3: Dump Bag Directly Into Garbage (Alternative to this step: Give Them Away to People You Hate!)

Step 4: Make Better Life Choices

Candy corn is the worst because it actually looks like it tastes good. Ron Swanson said that skim milk is water that’s lying about being milk. Well, I think candy corn is candy that is lying about being a delicious, colorful, cone-shaped treat. They have a lovely fall color scheme, and like all other things fall, you’d think they would be wonderful and delicious. BUT NO. They instead are small triangles of evil. The taste, the texture, it’s just all bad. This is a hill that I am willing to die on.

Now that I’ve shared the most important lesson that I have for you, it’s time to nominate some awesome bloggers to answer the questions…

I Nominate:

Bill (A Silly Place)

Pea (Smelly Socks and Garden Peas)

Michelle (Michelle’s Clutter Box)

Bex (BEXoxoBlog)

Koral (The Unsanity Blog)

Erin Rose (The Rosebud)

As per usual, there is absolutely no pressure to participate if you don’t want to! But if you guys enjoyed this and want to share your Halloween feels, I can’t wait to read them!

  1. This was so much fun to read! Thanks so much for doing the tag! I think it’s so much fun that your dad’s birthday is on Halloween, so you get double the special memories on that day! And that rap you made up as a kid sounds incredible! Do you remember any of it? If so, you need to recreate it or at least post it on here so we can all be amazed at your child genius! Hahaha, I’m torn with candy corn: it’s not delicious to me, but it’s also not awful. To me, it just tastes kind of old fashioned, like black licorice or taffy, candies that they had back in the day before they had decent candy, lol.

I hope you have a great Halloween this year and happy birthday to your dad too!

    1. I’m glad that you enjoyed it — thanks for nominating me! ☺️

I don’t remember it, unfortunately 😭😭 making up songs and stuff and generally being a ham was my thing haha. Wow, I thought candy corn was love it or hate it for most people, I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone ambivalent to it. I just can’t get over the weird texture!

Thanks so much! I hope you have a wonderful Halloween, too!
